A visit to Zacharias, the super cult café of Ilioupoli, together with @tastelocalgreece and some unique friends.
If you want to experience for a while the atmosphere of a 1960s coffeehouse, here you’ll even find a table for préfa (a Greek card game) with the right company.
Greek coffee in the old thick cup, but also a well-cooked meal from the hands of Zacharias and Roula. Homemade, changing every day!

The invitation
Our friend Rania, who lives in Ilioupoli, invited us, and of course we rushed over…
The place was crowded on the street, but she promised us we would like it.
She knew how much I loved old classic coffee shops.
I had taken her once to Lelouda for a tasting and she knew my preferences.
The ones that come with tsipouro or ouzo and the classic small meze.
Zacharias, the cafe in Ilioupoli, is one of those places.
Three or four dishes, the best of which is boiled goat, meatballs plain or with sauce, unique giant beans, a spetzofai-style sausage, which we had to order special fried potatoes to soak up the rest of the sauce!!!
There was panic for half an hour until we wiped everything clean with the bread, so that the dishwasher wouldn’t have too much work to do!

The test
Let me explain…
You come here for the atmosphere, so don’t start complaining that there’s no menu, no bottled wine, no fluted glasses, etc.
Don’t start analyzing the food.
Of course you’re not going to ask for a pepper mill and “afrala” salt…

Come just to hang out with your friends and have a good time eating a well-cooked meal! A unique spot for those in the know.
And then, with a Greek straight shot, we threw in a round of prefa…
The old coffee shops need love and support because they are our culture…

At #TasteLocalGreece, we taste and promote all our favorite hangouts.
The local products we discover, the places we visit, and those that fit our philosophy.
The taverns we discover in our culinary quests. Our articles have no commercial benefit. Often, the restaurants we visit are unaware that we will be mentioning them.
They are all our personal experiences, and we share them with you. We strive to highlight forgotten flavors, authenticity, and simplicity that have been lost from our lives.
